Hi,
Last conversation is noted as January. Do you still meet?
I'm a Brit living in Portlaoise since October 2006. You can find out more about me at my personal space.
I love it here. I'm learning more all the time about the history and heritage. I'm going to post a piece about Portlaoise in Peer Review. Anybody care to correct any mistakes?

Gnomon - time to move on

Let me know when it is there and I'll have a look at it. I can't guarantee to correct all the mistakes, though, since I don't live in Port Laoise.

We haven't met in a while. I think the last time we got together was last summer. It needs a few active people to organise a get together.

Welcome to the club!

Yes, it's been a while since we last met up. Still though, they are a lot of fun when a get-together happens. I'll try to look in on your entry too, not that I am very familiar with Port Laoise either.

Thanks both. I'm still working on it but will post a link here when I post the article. BTW a group of us Irish members of the gardening boards met up at Dublin's Botanic Gardens in May this year. We had a good day out. Here's a link to the thread: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbgardening/F2759006?thread=5130822&skip=140&show=20

It looks good. Well done! smiley - applause

It would benefit from a few headers to break it up into sections. If you don't want to learn GuideML (with which you can do fancy coloured headers), just put the headers on a line on their own with a blank line before and after them.

Dividing it up like this concentrates the mind wonderfully. You'll be able to see then whether parts are irrelevant, whether some topics are not covered in enough detail and so on.

Yes, I can't really fault the entry. It's pretty comprehensive. I'm glad you mention the Rock of Dunamaise, as it has intrigued me for a long time - it's easily seen from the Portlaoise Bypass.

Would it be worth, I wonder, doing a few more sentences on the Prisons? The reason I mention it is because you seem to skip from the renaming to the modern day rather quickly. Portlaoise Prison, as far as I know, houses some of the most dangerous prisoners in the state. The infamous "Border Fox", Dessie O'Hare, spent many long years there after going on what can only be called a wild west rampage up and down the country in the mid 1980's.

Also take a look at capitalisation.

Hope that helps!

Thanks woodpigeon,
I shall need to do some further research on the prisons.
BTW I've posted an update this evening.
