My suggetion of sliding the spare wheel uder the car failed to take into account that some cars have nice shiny alloy wheels. I'm so used to having steels that I didn't think about it.
Another point for those with wheel trims held on with cable ties - carry a pair of side cutters in the car!

Gah. I didn't think about it either. I've only ever had bog standard wheels as well. I'll adjust the entry.
