The weapons cache at As Zubayr - initial thoughts
Vashti Started conversation Mar 24, 2003
We know that on 31st January 2003, missile inspectors flew by helicopter to the Az Zubayr Naval Complex. This corresponds with the weapons cache being located at a heliport and the reports that it "looked like a naval weapons cache". So far, there has been very little real detail.
The Al-Harith missiles that have been referred to sound like they originated with the Al-Harith State Company. So these may be the Al-Volka/SA-2 missiles that were tagged or stickered by UNMOVIC in February. This was done during an inspection of the Al-Milad factory, which was part of the Al-Harith Workshop. Five of these missiles had been destroyed by 9th March.
"one larger missile between 30 and 40 feet long":
No idea what this is without more information.
"giant naval mines and fuses":
As I understand it, these are not proscribed - only nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, and missiles capable of travelling further than 150 kilometres. So it means nothing that these have been found.
