Why does the United Kingdom have so many different regional accents or we either speak English, Welsh, Scottish or Irish!?! But why?

I think the sexiest accents in the world are:
* Welsh
* Yorkshire/Notts
* Australian
* American
* Italian

and many others

Andrea- Best off out of there anyroad, the estate I'm on at the moment has quietened down so it aint too bad. Seacroft has got worse. May move back to Leeds, Bradford is becoming a tough city to live in, rates are up, police spending is up 35% and we crime is escalating big time. Not that I mind a bit of light crime, but street robberies are on the increase thanks to our soft council.
