Atheist's Day
Æsahættr: Googling Fool (sorry, sorry, sorry - I'm not changing it now though) Started conversation Feb 3, 2003
I think that an official "non-deity" holiday is a great day.
I celebrate Christmas as I enjoy giving and reciving presents and it's generally the only time when I get to see all of my friends and family together.
However...
I get rather uncomfortable with the whole concept. To actively partake in a celebration based on something that I do not believe in seems hypocritical. The fact that Christianity caused me to fall out with one of my best friends (he 'discovered God', I 'discovered the lack of God' and we disagreed somewhat vociferously) means that I get distinctly fidgety when people start talking about remebering the real reasons for Christmas.
So yes, back on topic, a day when I can celebrate togetherness with my loved ones without having to pretend tolerance and belief of problematic fairy tales would be most welcome. And if we could subvert 25th of December for it's use then we needn't even alter the calenders. We can call it 'Ex-Mas'
Cheers

I wholeheartedly agree. Those who celebrate Christmas and those who celebrate Athiest's day could open presents on the ame morning without feeling akward.
no
oh yeh and I'll gladly join.

I like the idea of calling it ex-mas, and by the way, February 11 is the 42 day of the year, and thus, forty two day. So do you want to join stupid user name guy?

what's the beef with the Catholics? are they the only non-atheists? or just specially awful in some way that fundamentalist christians, creationists, other non-christian religions (being very careful here) aren't? Just curious.

The "beef" with Catholics, as I'm sure Jordan will agree, has little to do with difference in belief, and more to do with the fact that Catholics, for the most part, despise athiests. I have yet to meet a Catholic who has not stopped speakingto me when the subject of religion comes up (on a side note, this has only happened twice, since true Catholics are few these days). However, if someone of Catholic belief would prove to me that these persons were merely individual morons, then I might reivaluate my opinion on them.

that is part of my hatred, I don't like Catholics mostly for that they mourn their faith. I don't particularly dislike theists, but as andrew described, I hate people that hate atheists, and Catholics generally fall neatly into that category
By the way, I think "Ex-Mas" should be seperate from Atheist's day
And who are you, DavidJSimpson, are you catholic, atheist or what? I'm curious

I wouldn't say that I hate theists - well apart from slavering fundies that is - but they do get on my nerves. The most annoying statement made by theists is "I can't prove that God exists, but you can't prove that he doesn't".
I DON'T HAVE TO PROVE ANYTHING! Atheism is a negative proposition - it isn't a belief in something; it's the exact opposite. I do not accept that there is anything to believe in therefore I cannot 'prove' anything.
If I say that I don't believe in lions, I can't prove this viewpoint - but I don't have to. You however, being a lionist, can show me proof of the existence of lions.
So, until someone "shows me the lion", I'm an atheist and I'd appreciate an end to spurious compromise arguments - they don't work.
Right that's another - any more and I won't be able to afford

I've said this before, I'll say it again, the most annoying comment I've ever heard is, "AHHHH!! It's Atheist!" The best way to resolve this is to point at the theist and yell "AHH IT'S CHRISTIAN/MUSLIM/JEWISH" Of course Christians tend to be the most arrogant.
