The Badger King gets along with badgers very well. Although why he keeps sending them to me I don't know.

I'm sorry I'm not writing under better circumstances. I've read some of your writing and you seem like a really fun person. With Shazz away, I don't really know who to contact, and I know you've been a friend to several, aka random (rick).

It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that Rick died on Sunday, September 4th. He had been very ill for about a month. I would appreciate it if you could please pass this info on to the rest of the Post Staff.

Thanks,

Nancy, dna_level_c (cleveland, spelled backwards) - I'm the girl Rick was referring to in his Journal entry of Dec. 7, 2002 - the one from the indians forum who lives about 40 miles away.

I'm so, so sorry to hear this. Rick will be missed. I always enjoyed reading his articles and other comments, and I noticed that he hadn't been around the site lately. Now I know why. smiley - blue It's just nothing but bad news lately...

I'll let the rest of the Post team know.

Do you know if there are any charities or other organizations where I could make a donation in his name?

I've notified the Post team and the In-House team. I also created a condolence page at A5629737 where people can leave messages.

Hi Quiz,

I love what you wrote for Rick! It's perfect. I hope you don't mind, but I copied it onto the Indians forum, where we have a sympathy thread going also. I think his friends there would really enjoy it. Next to Rick, I think you're my second-favorite writer - you have such a way with words! With him gone, I guess that makes you my favorite now.

There were no memorial services for Rick, per his request, and he was cremated. His 'real life' friends are hoping to scatter his ashes in his own back yard, over the lake called Eerie, the place he loved the best.

If you would be so inclined to make a donation in his name, Rick's favorite charity was the Hospice of Ashtabula County. They had taken good care of his mom when she passed on 15 years ago. As you probably know, Rick was involved from the sidelines with a local Ashtabula band, 'The Blues Project', whose proceeds all benefitted the Hospice.

I'm not real familiar with this site so I don't know if they let you post links or not. But you can find Rick's obituary online in the Ashtabula Star Beacon on September 7 & 8, 2005.

The address for the hospice is: Hospice of Ashtabula County, 1166 Lake Avenue, Ashtabula, Ohio 44004.

Thank you for helping to pass the word on, Quizzical. Rick was a special person and someone I know I'll never forget.

Thanks for the info. Hospice is a wonderful organization - they took care of my mother as well when she had cancer. (Links like that are fine, I believe - we try to avoid the ones the scream 'buy something!', though.)

I wrote a longer obit for next week's Post, which you can see here: A2385920. Feel free to share it if you think others would appreciate it. As I mentioned in the article, I wish I could have known Rick in real life. He had such down-to-earth and sane views on life, and he could be very funny. Altogether a neat guy. I guess if you leave a big empty spot behind you when you die, you've lived a worthwhile life...

(And thank you for your kind words about my writing. I really admired Rick's work - and since he was often past deadline and writing fast, the quality is even more impressive. smiley - smiley)

Hi there! There's quite a lot of activity going on at Alabaster House - it's difficult to keep up with that, and the Post, and sub-editing duties... Feel free to wander by the Official Kitchen ie, the Sweets Suite (http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/brunel/F2733189?thread=1274365) and sample some brownies and chocolate chip cookies...

Could you please edit the Plastic Bags entry (A2263475) to include, in its section entitled "Storage", a reference to the Storing Plastic Bags entry (A3740492)?

I'm trying to draw attention to my comment!

Hi, Libertus!

I'll pass your request to the Editors (sometimes referred to as the Italics). It may take a while for the update to happen, as a couple of the Italics are out of the office at the moment... smiley - smiley
