h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

I first saw Tom Stoppard's 'The Real Thing' back in the early eighties, shortly after it was first staged. The production I saw was at the Citadel Theatre here in Edmonton, on the Shocter Stage. I was absolutely gobsmacked by the writing, so overwhelmed that I have no idea of who the actors were. I laughed out loud at 'Save the gerund and screw the whale.. Nobody else did.

As soon as I could, I got me a copy of the play (Faber & Faber) and I've reread it regularly -- sometimes several times a year -- ever since.

So, I just finished it again and I must recommend it to one and all and mention that it has particular relevance today as the Occupy movement seems to be being hammered by an emotional backlash.


And it's funny. Very, very funny.

If it's all as funny as that quote..or even half as,..it's got to be something pretty genius.

There's a thing in the play about an anti-war protest which I find shines a light on the Occupy thing and motivations, etc.

Occupy are annoying me a bit now here. The media of course can easily ridicule them because of their 'image' with their tents. They refuse to negotiate with the City of London Corporation who are responsible for running the area, about when and if they will leave. Apparently some people are now threatening to take the City corp to court for not enforcing the Law.

All kinds of stories are now put about by the City, but de nada from Occupy. Supposedly they have no leaders, apart from their lawyer.

In media age you need some savvy to deal with that.

I start to think they do more harm than good to the cause of the cuts and the bankers.

One thing any organisation should take fully on board is the *media* that's half the battle..it's the height of naivety to think otherwise. And in the UK the media is so immensely powerful and influential.

I wish I could make up my mind about them. But maybe that's a good thing?
