I awoke about 1 am to the sound of sirens, sirens and more sirens. And then I noticed a sort of irregular popping noise. And more sirens. Sirens for a good twenty minutes ripping down the main street a block away.
After a bit of looking about in news sources . . .
'Firefighters are battling a two-alarm blaze at the Bethany Senior Citizens Home just off Whyte Avenue at 83rd Avenue and 99 Street.'

That's just a block away!
What a nightmare for the seniors living there.

It seems one person has died:

'Police are treating the seniors' centre as a crime scene while they investigate how the fire spread from a burning vehicle in the parking lot to a suite on the third floor. The cause of the vehicle fire hasn't been determined.'

Well, at this point it seems that someone set fire to a car.
Beside a Seniors' Residence.
At one am.
Nothing bad could come of that.

now it seems they blew up a car
at 1 am
beside a seniors residence.
'Two firefighters were slightly hurt during the fire which began around midnight after a loud explosion.
A burned-out car was discovered in the parking lot of the seniors residence in what firefighters are treating as a separate fire'

Two dead (both residents of the complex) now and police 'are not looking for suspects'.
It sounds like a tragic domestic story.
