A thought on rereading Kafka's Metamorphosis
anhaga Started conversation Feb 6, 2010
Never mind the big cockroach. I've just recently reread the Metamorphosis and the thing seems so bloody transparent that I'm embarrassed by the incomprehension I felt reading it too long ago as a freshman.
Gregor is disabled by depression and/or terminal illness, symbolized by his vermin-state. His family has trouble dealing with his illness, but it does spur them to achievement and discovery of resources they hadn't realized they had. And then, his death lifts a load off their shoulders.
It seems so obvious now.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
