Well! Isn't that a pleasant surprise?
anhaga Started conversation Apr 25, 2005
So, I was checking out Mooter today and I came across a reading list for an introductory Medieval Literature course from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, and, there I was! On the reading list!
I'm an authority!

Mooter?

I Googled for it and got a rather bare web page with little more than a search field, so I went to one of the links and found out a bit more about the site, but it seems to be written in some sort of advertising or marketing speak that left me rather

It is kind of strange and I don't know that it will catch on but - -
I'm on the reading list for a course at the U of Newcastle!

Interesting. I've tried Mooting for a few titles of my own entries - some of which come up on top of Google, some of which don't, and I'm getting pretty much the same results. What's the advantage of the cluster would you say?

I suspect the advantage of a cluster would be if you weren't exactly sure of how to find something. It's sort of a hound bringing back an example of everything type of thing you've hit with a shotgun so that you can send him back for just the red headed ducks. Doesn't seem like much of an advantage. I did, however, find some things that Google didn't turn up.
Including me at Newcastle U.
(real scholarly publication, BTW)

I'll give it a test run. I just heard today that Google is abandoning one of its core values regarding advertising and offering banner ads, and allowing advertisers to target their ads instead of basing them on keywords I do hope this isn't the beginning of the end for Google as we've come to know and love it now that it's a public company.

I'd heard that google went to advertising quite some time ago. Even before it went public.
February's issue of Scientific American has an article about the future of search engines. That's were I found out about Mooter. I've not finished the article yet: maybe I'll come across something better.

Google has made money from selling advertising for a good while, but with very strict rules that set it apart from advertising in general. Google ads have always been simple links until now - no banners.

This one's interesting too: http://www.kartoo.com/
A little slow, but interesting. You have to play around with it and explore it, but I'm finding it very interesting.

Some, (ok, a very few!), banner ads are tasteful, or at least unobtrusive. It's those lame animated ones that usually annoy me the most
The Adblock plugin alone is reason enough to use the Firefox browser, imo
