Ok, I’m back. So, you want me to tell you about my orientation week… I forgot what I told you before, a lot of people asked me about it, therefore, I’ll just write everything.
It all started on Sunday, they put us in the dorms and gave us an hour to get to know each other (on our floor). My roommate turned out to be really nice person, her name was Diana and she looked so much like Dana (if you remember Rumanian girl from our school). Then we went to meet our supervisor (again on our floor), we talked about everything that we like or don’t like, places we were from and other stuff. There I saw a girl who looked exactly like Vika (my ultimate best friend in the world), so I told to myself that I HAVE to know her. Although, it is tough to pursue people and not look like lesbian =), because I was very exited.
In the evening they sent us to meet other people who are going into the same major. Engineering group was about 60 guys and 2 girls, from whom only about 7 people went for mechanical eng. Also, there were 3 guys who clamed to speak fluently Russian (I never found out if it was true… They all looked like those people you can’t trust, and I don’t usually trust guys at all… with some exceptions *winks*), and 5 guys who played tuba. This meeting was a little boring, I was really tired and uncomfortable, because I didn’t know anyone. At about 11:15 they said that we can go back to our dorms. It turned out that the door in my room was broken and we couldn’t close it. The light from the hallway was kind of annoying, and I couldn’t fall asleep… I have to make a confession, I’m used to sleeping with a stuffed polar bear since I was 15 (Vika gave it to me for my birthday). The problem is that, now when I’m used to it, I can’t fall asleep when there is nothing between my hands… It hurts and I don’t know where to put my hands. After a lot of suffering I finally fell asleep at 3:30.
The next morning those who had to take language exam had to wake up at 6 o’clock. We had breakfast and I went to take my Latin exam (it was hard, I mean we didn’t have that material in school, so I didn’t care about it much). For engineers it’s not required. By that time I developed a severe headache… The math exam started right after Latin without any break, horrible… at least I thought so. I rushed because there wasn’t enough time, but it turned out that math was really easy (and I mean REALLY) you didn’t even need a calculator… I finished it in 30 minutes and it felt good. Most of that day we just had tours around the campus (it’s huge). I also met with my advisor who said that my math exam results were very good, he put me right into Calculus II, I was surprised to know that only 2% were put there… so it’s going to be tough. Then I went to sign for classes, that experience wasn’t so pleasant, because many classes overlapped and most importantly, I couldn’t get any art classes, because they were only for those who are majoring in art =( that was a shock! So here’s my schedule for autumn 2003:
CalcII
Physics + Labs
Engin + Lectures
Brave New World (lit)
Intro. To Visual Arts (which I hope to switch on real art. I was told that if I bring my portfolio, they might let me take it)
When we were done with all that stuff, there was a recreational program in the evening. There was a choice to go to the movies, to go to the disco, or to take a tour to Amherst. I was going with my new friends to go to the tour, but all the tickets were gone (there were only 30 places). I really wanted to go to the disco, but you were not there =) so I didn’t. On my way from the auditorium I met that girl who looked like Vika… I just started to talk to her, we went to the dorms and spent 4 hours talking, so she turned out exactly what I thought she would be. She is from California, and her name is Nia…. I guess God helped me, I’m glad that the last ticket went to a person in front of me and I didn’t go to that trip.
On Tuesday everything went in a rush. Tours, signing up for dorms… writing test, and tons of other things. My parents came at 2, I got my ID card and we went home.
Those three days were so exhausting, walking from 6am to 12:30. I couldn’t stand up on Wednesday. But the rest of the trip was great, I loved almost everything. So many cool people, nice place… can’t wait until my classes start. And you know what? I really want to be an Engineer!
Wow, I’m done writing. Hope you are not asleep yet. It’s long…
Cheers! See you later…
