Happy memorial day.
As I sit here in my lab in the Penn State Department of Astrophysics. I can only wonder why these holidays don't apply to me.
Well, enough of my whining.
Today is the day that we Americans celebrate the lives (or more accurately lack thereof) of all the brave men and women (mostly men) who died serving this country.
Now as we are once again attacking another country, I wonder if we should change the idea of this holiday. There are so many people who die in wars, on our side or theirs, none of whom who are evil. Maybe we should remember everyone who has died, apologize for the violence, and hope that we are not the cause of any additional war memorials next year.
Sometimes war is inevitable, but that doesn't mean that we have to be happy about it.

Amen! I wondered if I was alone in this line of thinking.
This is a copy of the note I tacked up on a monument in one of the local village squares, where they were once again trying to appeal to the 'patriotic' side of all of us to raise money for another tribute to deaths:
This world will never know peace until all nations tear down all monuments to WAR and erect instead monuments to mourn the young men and women who were forced to DIE because, on this tiny planet we call home, a world of humans and their leaders COULDN'T GET ALONG!!!
