Hi there! Only been here for a week or so and already you have found my Zappa thread. h2g2 can be a confusing, huge space to navigate but I found that you get into it whatever you want. There are many serious topics but also p***takes, so join in anything that takes your fancy.
My zappa thing was a parody of a religious debate that is going on but it seemed to grow and grow into it's own life.
(sigh) It's a heavy burden to form a new religion!
And of course I can't speak to you on that thread in a normal voice ..... on there I SPEAK WITH THE VOICE OF FRANK
Oh yeah, if you want to use icons, click on one and a page will appear with them all on.

so, superdogmonkey has a real voice...good to heaar you 'in the flesh' rather that being Frank (no pun intended)...but tell me - I am curious to know why you limit your zappaesque enjoyment to the time frame in your profile...why deny yourself the pleasures of baby-snakes (for instance)..looking at what you are into, it seems to me that even if you got into the sheer guitar grunge god riff of the intro in the title track it would be worth the purchase / burning / theft / borrow??...even if you refuse to do the studio stuff, surely 'You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore vol 1 - 6 cannot be avoided...
maybe you just don't buy zappa the riff monster...I guess I'm a little sold on zappa generally ...I have to admit to loosing a little on the Yellow Shark, Civ. phase III stuff, but what the hell...maybe I'll see the light when I'm 60 and sitting with my pipe and slippers.....
other stuff...how velvet are white stripes? good stuff...and how f**ked up is ozzy on the osbournes...poor guy - can't help thinking he needs another house to get away from sharon (I know I would)...have you seen sabbath live in the last 10years? can he still cut it on stage?...surprised you don't put a time zone on bowie...in my view? naval gazing since the man who sold the world...but that's just me...anyway...I'm workin on getting more sleep also - so I hope you'll understand if I

dugdog,a lot of questions to reply to.
zappa - i tried the early mothers stuff and found it too jumbled up and bitty. it didn't start to gel (for me) until Hot Rats and Chunga's Revenge. Really liked Burnt weenny, Weasels, Waka/Jawaka, Roxy and elsewhere and then One Size, Over-nite and (!). From then on I found out (after spending to much cash!) that I did not like the later stuff. The guitar dropped off and synths came in. I found each album had only two or three tracks I liked, so I burnt copys and sold the albums.
Albums I only liked some tracks from -
Joe's Garage (cd two!)
Tinseltown (4)
Drowning witch (2)
On stage vol 2 or 3 (not sure - the helsinki gig) - half of it
There are some more but I ain't got the time (doing this from work!)
I don't like shiek yerbooti !! which i realise is enough to get me strung up on the Frank Voice thread as a blasphemer and unbeliver!
Bowie - My favourite period is Man who Sold through to Diamond Dogs.
Liked some of the Berlin trilogy and thought his last 3 albums worth a listen.
Ozzy- an advert against taking drugs that I've ever seen!
I saw Sabbath in '77 at hammersmith odeon - f*****ng wicked.
Yes, I do like the white stipes - very primitive but enjoyable. His voice does get a bit whiny though.

dugdog <a.k.a. - corla planktun...buffer of the tiny ruby> Posted Dec 6, 2002
I respect a man who knows what he likes....and you've obviously given the man a fair trial...I think I'd agree, you've certainly pinned down the highlights of the back catalogue - and I have to hold me head above the trenches and say I thouhgt make a jazz noise here just takes the piss! if just smells funny - that album stinks (in my view)...but before I shut up, I wonder if you lost interest enough not to try shut up and play your guitar? a bit 'out there' in places...but not to much synth (if any)....
and so to other things perhaps - Sabbath in 77 f**k me you must have either been a child or you're pipe and slippers material...I thought I was old and I was 7 when you were moshing in the pit....ahh Hammersmith Odeon - the days before the Labatts Apollo(?!)...anyway I envy you that gig - must have been awesome....
I don't think I've got much to compete in the real metal stakes, but I did to Pink Floyd's Momentary Lapse tour (twice)...Tull at the NEC (Catfish Rising Tour)....and Bowie's Glass Spider (fiasco!)...other live music highlights of later include Roy and Nick Harper (Roy came on stage to Nick doing a acoustic version of zappa's titties and beer...at the point where the 'up jumped the devil' kicked in....(we just can't escape he guy!!)...anyway gotta go get ready for work, later...

I too went to the Glass Spider tour - Wembly Stadium I never forgave him until we saw him at the Shepards Bush Empire to promote the "earthling" album ..... fantastic.
Yes, as you have so hurtfully said, I am an old git of 42.
Mind you it means I've been around enough to see live:-
Pistols,Clash, B. Surfers, Zappa Damned and a load more!!
The Labatts Apollo just ain't got the same ring to it.
I don't post on the weekend, so talk to you Monday!

you saw zappa!! you qualify for demi-god status, just for having been in the same room as the great man himself!!!...can't hang out for long, it's 1:08 am and I need some sleep (working late on a big presentation this week)....so I'm off - just thought I'd say hi.

superdogmonkey Posted Dec 10, 2002
Hope the presentation is going ok.
However I fear my demi-god status is now going to be reduced to feeble minded village idiot after the following tale!
Zappa was part of the Knebworth festival '77/78? (can't quite recall due to my doddering age!) which also included The Tubes, Boomtown Rats, Peter Gabriel and others. I was a fully fledged punk and honour bound to attend the gig speeding off my tits and fueled with cheap lager.
When Zappa came on, it appeared to be the slowest, most boring event of my life. For gods sake, I had been fighting in the punk wars and the Ramones had not prepared me for 20 minutes guitar solo's!
Naturally enough, We retired to the beer tent !
I shudder to think of the material he played and that I missed!
It was only 3 years ago I saw the light and realised what I had done!
Doh!

well, at least you're big enough to confess - you are forgiven, although your pennance should be 20 electric aunt jemima's and a hail suzie...
I suspect that, in the same state of drunk drug-induced , lager fueled speed freakdom I would have probably done the same....while we're on the subject of (albeit tentatively) 'claims to fame' here's my list....
1. I once gobbed cider in the face of Fish (from Marrillion).
2. Loaded a pipe with weed and passed it around all the members of Hawkwind live on stage!
and 3 (and you're gonna like this one) my mum went out with Val Doonican!!!
once again, I am pressed for time as my 5 year old wants to know why there were dinosaurs (any ideas?) L8R
Oh, The Madness of Zappa geeks!
superdogmonkey Posted Dec 11, 2002
Ah, I dream of gobbing cider at Fish!
Tell me more about Hawkwind - I'm a big fan (until lemmy left).
I'm curious about Val D.
Did your Mum date him before, during, after he was at the height of fame?...tv shows etc.
My mate's uncle was Bernie the Bolt on "The Golden Shot"!
I've knocked Green's (from Sritti Politti) hat off!
And told Fergal Sharkey to get a proper haircut!

dugdog <a.k.a. - corla planktun...buffer of the tiny ruby> Posted Dec 13, 2002
me and hawkwind go back to the distant days of Bilbo Baggin's Birthday Party, a little known event up in Herefordshire which used to raise money for the travellers school bus project...it used to be an annual gathering of blaggers and trouble makers (and hairy students which is where I fitted in) - at a big stately home (Clyro Court) which was inherited by some hippy and used to throw parties n stuff.....anyway a thinly veild excuse for a major piss-up, to celebrate the birthday of said hobbit..the idea was if you dressed up as a Tolkien type you got in free, spent loads at the bar and all the profit after outlay on beer went to the kids travelling school type thing..a good plan - and one that Dave Brock and his mates bought into and turned up every year (no lemmy, I'm afraid...too young (@32!) to remember lemmy pre M.Head)...anyway, I'm sat at the side of the stage doing what students (then) did best in the way of persuing an interest in the combustability of certain herbs and Mr. Brock decides the band want a bit of the action...so (being somewhat star struck) proceeded to oblige...all very alternative...and so to Val Doonican (without a breath from Hawkwind to Val Doonican...this must be unprecidented!)...my gran was the wardrobe misstress at a theatre in scotland through the 50's 60's and 70' s and my mum (doing her best impresonation of sandra dee) caught the eye of mr. D (well before my dad was on the scene) and they went out for a date (just the one, val had a girl in every port)...
I applaude your views regarding Fergal Sharkey's haircut - you should have given him Green's hat..sorry, but I can't help thinking green's hat / what a t**t...funny that.

..zappa in oz? I confess I am lost...I'm in Gloucestershire...!?
I'd have love to have jumped into the other zappa compilation conversation, but am just too shagged - gotta get to bed...we must discuss the pleasures of introducing your off-spring to zappa..you're gonna love that one.

Zappa in Oz is a new release!
A double live CD from a set in Australia in '77.
Material covers lots from Apost(!), One size + Overnite (some of my favs!) , early Mothers stuff and the usual madness .
When baby sdm was tiny, I used to rock her asleep to Zappa compliations!

ahh...the light has been seen. amazon has been visited. debit card has been stung. and said double cd has been ordered.it only remains for sd.monky to be thanked for pointing out the error of my ways in missing it in the first place.
praise the lard...(seriously thanks - that track listing was enough to make me instantly reach for my plastic!).
can't hang right now....just wanted to say the above...one thing is your off-spring really called sdm..if so - how the fk do you say it?
catch you 2moro
Oh, The Madness of Zappa geeks!
superdogmonkey Posted Dec 18, 2002
Ah-ha, sdm is just the generic term for one of my tribe. She is called Charlotte.
My other half is mrsthewife who you have just called a witch!
But it is deserved due to her scant regard for frank.
Oh, you should hear her moan when Waka/Jawaka is playing!!!!!

Well Happy Birthday to you
Looking at your user space, Last year I felt a nostalgic urge to return to some of the albums I flogged when i became a punkster and purchased Stand Up by Tull. Still very powerful, with a bluesy influence that they kind of lost and I had forgot how good the songs were + heavy guitar.....nice!

dugdog <a.k.a. - corla planktun...buffer of the tiny ruby> Posted Dec 20, 2002
thanks for the birthday whistle - nice touch (btw, is it possible to invent your own smiley?)
yeah...Tull - very keen for a good long while, although I gave up collecting in the early 80's (the dire straights comparisons of the time had some weight, I have to confess)...having said that, I still wheel out the oldies from time to time - classics on cd that kind of thing...can't really hang right now, (gotta get back to work).
catch you soon for more on civ phase 3 and heavy horses.....
