I've just added Guns, Germs, and Steel: the Fates of Human Societies to the book list. It was written by Jaren Diamond Professor of Physiology at the UCLA School of Medicine, who won the Pulitzer Prize for it.
I haven't read the book, yet but absolutely will after reading the riveting transcripts of a talk he gave on the same subject. I'd call it a 'must read'!
