Well, sawe on tuesday that the first house I had been to see had had the price dropped by a significant amount for their 'easter sale'. The drop in price compensates for the issues I had in not going for it (some of which I suspect is that it was the first one I had been to see and I didn;t want to make that mistake again).
So I just made an offer very close to the sale price on it. There's no chain involved which is good as well.
We shall see!
Oh, and spoke to my solicitor about the planning stuff I mentioned in my other journal and asked him what was going on. His response was 'I don't know, I think they may have completely lost the plot. I'll send them a stern letter telling them to stop messing about'. Which made me laugh a bit.
Apparently you can get a standard form letter from the council which says they will take no action of alterations that are more than 4 yrs old. But we'll keep that one quiet as a fallback position.
Fingers crossed!

So you didn't start looking at places to buy until your sale was well advanced then?
Just wondering as to how this bit works as we're going to be doing this soon and I've not done a sel l*and* buy transaction before.
Hope it all goes smoothly now

I didn't start looking properly until I had accepted an offer on mine, mainly cos until you have SSTC no seller will take you seriously.
It hasn't been ideal because once you have sold you are on a timer. A lot of buyers want to move to their timetable (obviously!) so it can be awkward to delay things as they might get hacked off and rescind their offer. But once they have spent money (ie done the searches, had the survey) then it costs them to back out
For me it wasn;t too much of a problem as I was prepared to go into rented accomodation for 6 months or so if I didn't find a place to buy.

I thought I'd managed to find some supplies for the warming:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/04/06/alcohol_cloud/
But then I found it was methyl alcohol which is really rather nasty and not advised for consumption. (as I'm sure Orcus will confirm!).
Oh well, there's bound to be a similar cloud of ethyl alcohol out there somewhere...

Unfortunately we can metabolise methanol - to formaldehyde - the stuff they use to preserve corpses. Ideal really because that's what you become if you drink enough of it
Thanks for the tip Ictoan, I wasn't sure which way around to do this.

well, different people do things differently, but my estate agents told me this was the best way.
Plus, if you are anything like me, you'll find your mind isnt really sharpened to the task of finding somewhere to live until you've sold your own place and are faced with the propect of rented accomodation (its only been 4 yrs but I sooo like having my own place!).

Do you need a whopping deposit for this sort of thing? I'm kind of hoping we can use our equity mostly but I guess you need some when you exchange.
Do you need a deposit of 5% of the mortgage or 5% of the purchase price?

Ah, just been looking it up, it looks like you can use your already sold house equity as deposit I think. That's cool. We should have over £80,000 equity so it would be somewhat annoying to have to come up with 10 grand deposits as well.
