So the contract company I worked for before coming to my new job has gone bankrupt and from the news reports, it's chaos and I probably won't get a W-2. The IRS person Mr. Emee talked to recommended filing an extension, but that won't gain me anything. Part of the company assets have been sold already and if I don't get a W-2 by mid February, I will probably never get one. I have bank statements that show the deposits but I don't know if I can lay my hands on the remittance statements that will show withholdings. They are probably in a box or a bag or a tote or a something in the black hole that is my garage. Time for a clear out.

Aye-yai-yai.
Call the IRS help line. They may be able to help you. After all, the W-2's refer to records the company should have already sent. Or at least they should be able to tell you how to get started on getting them, or what action you should take to avoid penalties circumstances beyond your control.
(Keep in mind, this is coming from someone who truly believes the IRS is unconstitutional both in the nature of 'income' taxes AND the methods it uses forcing us to FILE.)

That's part of the problem. The IRS is one of the company's biggest creditors. They didn't send in payroll taxes like they were supposed to.

Still something that is out of your control and that you shouldn't be penalized for. It may entail getting your bank to send a list of your deposits and estimating, but I'm sure the IRS has some procedure for someone in such a jam.

I'm sure they do. They have one for everything else. I was audited for financial aid 3 years in a row at uni and forgot to copy my tax form before I sent it in one year. IRS has a statement they print out & send if you ask nicely.

Yay! Mr Emee got hold of someone who was able to confirm W-2s were mailed out yesterday.

Glad to read they actually did send out W-2s! That would be such a nightmare.
