Mom went to church Sunday and had her house keys stolen off her key ring from the choir room while she was singing about the joys of the season. They were all neatly labeled - front door, back door, dead bolt. Fortunately, the church directory still has her old address in it. Now my stepdad officially has to put in the new locks he bought after his daughter moved out.

Wow.
That's disturbing.
We recently had burglars in our garage below my apartment. We have a fenced yard with to big black labs, but they were upstairs with me apparently (cold night). I was probably home when they were in there. They went out the back door which makes an awful noise when opened but I must have just thought it was my dad. We've heard about other neighbors in the area having their garages broken into (with crowbars) while they were home as well.
The local case of that fellow who shot two burglars in his neighbor's yard is getting a lot of press. He's also getting a lot of support as well as death threats. I think he did the wrong thing but I know why some people feel otherwise.
Having stuff stolen takes away a lot of your trust.

Nothing was disturbed or stolen when she & my stepdad got home. I really think the directory having the wrong address helped with that. The church has recently formed a security committee because funeral dinner hostesses from the church have had money stolen from their purses while serving meals.

And that sucks that you had burglars. Good thing you didn't interrupt. Any progress with the case?

Oh, there'll be no progress unless the get caught in another attempt. All we found missing was a jump start/compressor kit my dad bought from Harbor Freight (cheap import tools). It was only worth $50 and they left the charger for it. Sitting on the table right beside it were at least two cordless screwdrivers worth around $100 - $150 each and there were other tools worth much more than that... they dropped an old beat-up, worthless buffing wheel on their way out. What bothers me is how brazen they are going into places while folks are home. They've also consigned my doggies to some cold winter nights in their dog houses rather than nice and cozy with me.
My dad went back to Harbor Freight and picked up a fake security camera with a motion sensor to show a red light and pivot back and forth. It's not weather proof, but that's OK... I've got some gutter material that I'm going to attach to it to not only protect it, but to make it look more similar to actual cameras in case they've also seen this model at the stores.
Anyway, that someone actually took keys off the key ring is worrisome. But the theif can't be very smart... who wouldn't notice missing keys?

Glad they didn't make off with too much. Probably just wanted something they could take to a 'Re-tool' type store and unload quickly for cash. That they would break in while you're there says stupid or high.
First she noticed her car keys were out of order. But if they had been watching her for a few weeks, they would know that she goes out to lunch after church with her Sunday school class nearly every week. So sing for two services, keys are gone at say 9am, lunch and talking isn't over until 1:30ish then a 30 minute drive home. Plenty of time to carry out the Christmas presents, dishes, collectibles, clean out the tools, welder, winch, 1930's era roadster that needs restored, etc. But that hints at even more premeditation and is creepy on levels I really don't like to think about.

It's so distubring that it happened at church, of all places. People make me so angry.
