I'm worried...

...about my grandparents. They're not all that old - mid 70s - but they need to slow down some. Grandpa still drives a school activity bus & is in charge of all the other buses as well. He also teaches defensive driving classes. What has me worried is this: Grandpa has always been a car guy. One year he bought & sold enough of them that he was within one car sale of needing to purchase a used dealer license. He owns a 1948 Chevy Fleetline that is in original/near mint condition. I used to ride with him in parades when I was a kid. He wants to sell it. I know it's just a thing and he can sell it any time he wants to. I'm just worried that my grandparents are getting ready to die. Which is ridiculous really because I know they will some day and it's really better that they make arrangements ahead of time and sell things of value and live on the money instead of working so hard. But selling that car means that Grandpa won't have a reason to go over to the shed (a very large metal garage type building) and tinker around. It makes me wonder if he thinks he isn't able to any more. They're thinking of selling their house in southwest Kansas and moving closer to us grandkids (3 of my 4 brothers live in a town 40 miles from me & my mom lives south 4.5 hours & my uncle lives north 4.5 hours). It would be good because right now they're an 8 hour drive away and we could look in on them without being too obvious about it. Selling the car would give them a hefty downpayment on a new house. I guess I'm really just in denial about their mortality.

They may well be trying to tidy things up for you all, but they may also have just decided that their priorities are different.
Mortality is a difficult thing to deal with, I can remember the day it hit me that my Mum was SO much older and probably wouldn't last that long....that was 30 years ago and she's still around ( in body, anyway.)
The problem is that not only are you looking at their mortality, but your own...cos as the older generations "go on", how long before you become the "grown up"?
Anyway

Also you're worrying about something you have no business worrying about.
If they are indeed preparing that's fine. Being prepared for the end doesn't cause it to come. And it does no one any good to worry about it.
I think they're probably just readjusting things so they can enjoy their selves a bit more.

Thanks for the & . I'm trying to remember not to borrow trouble from tomorrow. Just difficult where the people you love are concerned.
Key: Complain about this post
