TF - Open Source DNA?

Just a question that sprang to mind... Over the years Jim Lynn talked a couple of times about making the DNA software open source... Now we're free of the Beeb, just what's the legal position vis-a-vis the software?
Was the consortium simply granted a licence to use DNA or do you have complete ownership of it?
What's the chance of seeing an Open Source version available one day?

The h2g2 we got from the BBC had three things:
- the database, which has all the entries, conversations, and the user lists. They removed any personal information from the user lists;
- the DNA system, which runs the traditional skins;
- the Barlesque system.
The BBC sold us Barlesque. They wouldn't part with DNA, so they gave us a licence to use it for five years.
Within the next five years, we have to fix all the bugs in Barlesque and then wrap it up so that it looks acceptable to all the goo/alabaster fans. Then we can stop using DNA.
Alternatively, we could write a new system from scratch and use that with the existing database.

Ouch! 
The final sting in the tail... "We don't mind selling your our buggy, inefficent and unpopular system, but we're keeping hold of the mature, efficient, multipurpose one..."
Oh well - there goes the idea of an open source DNA - guess I'll just have to start learning how to develop using Wikis... (Looking at developing an Intranet Knowledge Base for our company).
