A Conversation for Technical Feedback

slow, no?

i've just returned to h2g2 after a couple of months not thinking about it and am rather disappointed to find it no faster than i remember. sure, it's a big database, but don't you think you should get some bigger servers, fatter pipes or whatever you tech guys do?
i really don't think i can hang around and wait twenty seconds for a page of (essentially) text to load.
what's the beef?

I do not know where you are based, but h2g2 is a lot speedier since the last update - I get no time outs or connections refused. There was a prob with something (maybe not h2g2) over the past few days, as several people were having probs with the net....

I don't think 20 seconds is an unreasonable time to wait for a page to download... are you using a dial-up connection?

You wouldn't happen to be using Telewest as your ISP, connecting to h2g2 through them is almost impossible at the moment. smiley - sadface
but for some reason you can get through to some other sites with reasonable speed.

For the time being I've switched to using my Netscape online accountwhen using h2g2.

14.4kbps Modem, 10 seconds per-page maximum (even less under Linux), Tesconet and Freeserve ISPs. I don't see what you lot are moaning about.

10 secs, your just plain lucky!

At the moment it takes around 15 seconds before anything starts to appear smiley - sadface

With referece to my previous comment about Telewest, they have now fixed the fault which made it impossible to get in via them so I'm now back to normal.

Concerning Netscape, I heard the other day they're having a virus-protection problem, and some viruses are slipping into home PC's. Anyone know anything about that?

First I've heard of it, sounds a bit unlikely to me...

The browser shouldn't be expected to protect careless (or unfortunate) users from Viruses, it's first and foremost a text transfer tool.
