Using sms messaging costs money. That'll be the why not.
It used to be possible to get access using a WAP phone, but because of legal agreements signed by the bbc before they took on the Guide that become no longer possible.
There is a project by a few coders called inject2g2 which provides a scaled down version of h2g2 for palm top computers and in a way for WAP phones.

How would you use SMS for the guide? Would it just tell you someone has replyed to your post, etc.?

Aren't most guide entries too big to be sent in text msgs?

We are looking into whether we can have h2g2 available on wap phones, but I don't think they use SMS technology.

They don't.
Simply, WAP is very similar to normal internet access, except scaled down to restrict the amount of data that has to be sent through the air.
SMS is a method of sending text strings.
It *is* possible to write the scripts to recieve requests sent by SMS and then send out the relevant information, but it's usually not worth it. SMS is limited to something like 140/160 characters, I think. And is pretty much one way. No cookies, everything done server side, and a lot more hassle than it's worth.
It would be nice to see h2g2 made available for phones again though. What with the way phones are going...
