I've got a question I've been wanting to ask for some time now.
When you do a search using the box at the top of the site, no matter what skin you use, it always adds &searchtype=goosearch on the end.
For example on any alabaster page, search for "why", and you will be taken to this page:

What is the purpose of searchtype?

It tells the search page that it's a search from the top of the page, rather than a specific search from the main search page. It had a more specific meaning early on in h2g2's life. These days it's more of a relic.
