A Conversation for Talking Point: A Good Read
The Dark is Rising

I'm 15, and I've been reading books - especially fantasy and science fiction - from a young age. The things I enjoy about these two genres are that they allow escapes from life - almost anything is possible. One of my favourite books is called The Dark is Rising, which is also the name of the sequence of five books that it is the second part of. Although set in our world, it is a story of magic and a titanic battle between the Dark and the Light, which are portrayed excellently within the novel.
Throughout the series, the focus is on about five different main characters; sometimes they are together, sometimes individual. The Dark is Rising is an excellent series and ANYONE - not just those addicted to fictional books, like me - should give it a go.

"When the dark is rising six shall turn it back,
Three from the circle, three from the track.
Wood, bronze iron, fire water stone,
Five shall return and one go alone."
I've read them all (some several times) and loved the series. I first met them at school in year eight when we read "Over Sea, Under Stone" as a class book.

Hiya everyone,
I vaguely remember reading this series and enjoying it very much. Do you know the name of the author as your postings have encouraged me to seek it out and read it again.
Thanks,
Bronners

I re-read my copies recently, some 21 years after the first reading, and still thought they were as fantastic as ever

They seem to have a sort of timeless quality that draws people in no matter when they read them . . . the books are kind of out of date now, but nobody notices because they're so fantastic.
