Westby (n.) a twisted, kinked piece of fencing wire fastening a farm gate shut, often used as a temporary fix for a broken latch but somehow still on the gate years later when the original problem would have taken 15 minutes to fix. Coincidentally, this is also the length of time it takes to undo and re-fasten a Westby.

Westby is actually not a town, but a "locale" in SW New South Wales, Australia. It used to be a stop on a local railway, but the railway has been gone for over 30 years. This doesn't stop Westby from appearing as a major regional centre in the world atlas in my mother-in-law's living room in England.
