Formally known as Southampton Institute, and often refferred to as the 'other'university in Southampton. Southampton solent university is situated on East Park Terrace, in the centre of Southampton. It's facilities may not be as grand as the Uni, and the union may be small, but with Team Solent we have one of the best sports teams in the South. What we may lack in facilities, we make up for in character, and the tuition is excellent. We have fewer students than the Uni, but that is not surprising when you cram two universities into one city. Formally, degrees obtained at the Southampton Instutute would be awarded by Nottingham Trent University, but now that we are a fully fledged University, we have the power to award our own degrees. With a smaller student base than the institute, it seems that the ratio of staff to students is very high, and that the knowledge base of the tutors is excellent. This is particullaly helpful for those reading for their dissertations(!) One of the main points that I should raise about Solent Uni is that having two Universities in town paves the way for a little rivalry, and many of the clubs in Southampton can play on this, especially during Freshers week. Clubs may have quizzes and events pitting the wits of Southampton Solent uni against those of Southampton uni.
