Captain Oates: THE 'Poor Liar'

Lying is a skill; it must be acquired. Some people get very good at it and others….don’t. Some of the most famous lies include:
 I don’t know what you’re talking about
 I did not inhale
 I did not have sexual relations with [insert name of secretary/pet/family member here]
 I can’t remember last night
 As Prime Minister I promise to…
A particular favourite ‘bad lie’ of mine belongs to Captain Oates who journeyed with Captain Robert Falcon Scott to Antarctica. I do not doubt the courageousness of a man who sacraficed his life in order save the rest of his party but, when leaving your party, in the middle of a blizzard, using the excuse, “I just gonna go out and stretch my legs” just wouldn’t fool anyone. Okay, he didn’t use those exact words but…you get the gist. He was right in saying one thing however, “I may be some time”.
Respect to the man; an Englishman, an adventurer and a damned fine ‘poor liar’.
