Alanna the First Adventure By Tamora Pierce

1 Conversation

This is the first (I think) book written by Tamora Pierce. Set in Tortall twenty-two years before Realms of the Gods, it is about Alanna, a Swordsten year-old girl who wants to become a knight in a regressive faux-medieval world. It is the first book in a series of four.

This book chronicles the first four years of her struggle. She is forced by rules to pretend to be a boy named Alan, a boy who doesn't really exist, as her twin brother is a drippy boy called Thom (? Thom? What's that about?).

One thing that harms the book is the fact that Alanna is just not really likeable. She's arrogant, she looks down on other girls and women for not wanting to become Knights, she's selfrighteous, and in true Tamora Pierce style she does unnaturally better than everyone else.

Another irritating thing is the fact that Alanna has no female confidents - really no female friends at all. In fact, all her friends are boys, the youngest of which is four years older than her.
