Asperger's syndrome and love

1 Conversation

There is much in the way of literature on the subject of Asperger's syndrome. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the syndrome, it is a form of autism, that affects the social toolkit of affected individuals. Those with the syndrome find it difficult to understand the feelings of others, or understand their facial expressions. Indeed, those with aspergers may only use a limited number of facial expressions themselves. The affected individuals do not feel the same intensity of emotion as you and me. So what happens when an aspie meets a potential partner? For many, the initial reaction to the meeting is to discover what the partner wants, and if this is not what the aspie wants, then their relationship will likely not go ahead. Those with aspergers are not likely to compromise. Those affected, however, can have succesful sex and love lives, get married and have children. Their partner needs to be understanding towards their condition, and understand that routines need to be met, and the affected individual may find it difficult to talk about their feelings. As with any relationship, all it needs to work is a little understanding.
