Buy Nothing Day

On the busiest shopping day of the year, the day after American Thanksgiving, people from over fifty countries take a break from the frenzy and cast their vote against the global economy.

This is one of the biggest events in the anti-capatilist calendar. It sees a variety of groups from all over the world united in a day of action against the consumption of the worlds finite resources.

the groups are widely diverse but ubited by there goal of challenging the unsustainable consumer lifestyle

me and my classmates have been creating awarness of bnd. we have been postering the school halls, handing out flyers and making a mock news cast- all a count down to the big day. it will finish with a rally at lunch covered by the media(A channel) "we are the corporations whores" keep up bnd!

first BND action in Istanbul, Turkey. I am a freelance journalist and we are airing BND spots on The Open Radio (an independent radio station, www.acikradyo.com.tr). I also wrote about BND in a weekly newspaper I work for. So many people are interested. Just wanted to let you know!

people that came out to my band's show on october 27th were all informed about the buy nothing day. we also dropped by the speaker's corner by muchmusic downtown toronto and spoke about it. the clip was later played on much music. we plan on putting the nov. 29th reminder on the flyers of our upcoming shows as well. glad to support a good cause :) you can visit http://courtesyblush.cjb.net for more information about us.

we made hundreds of little 'buy nothing day 23 nov' stickers and hit our city's most upmarket mall, sticking them all over shelves (and the price tags)the escalator handrails, shop windows, coffee tables and so forth. some of us got nabbed by security but escaped before the police got there. we also did a spray paint campaign in well lit 'public' spaces.

on bnd a friend and i celebrated by perfroming an improvised piece of performance art in a gas station near the residential neighborhood where we live. i chased him into the store with a long white stick and he fell to the floor near the checkout, i hit him a few times before the clerk confiscated my stick. i ran out of the store acting confused and angry. the clerk came out to have a few words with me and my friend followed, upon seeing my friend i started fuming and angrily chased after him again, thus we made our exit. then we wrote a letter from our mother to the cashier appologizing

a handful of students at ryerson university and about 20 students from a local catholic high school, gave out over 900 handbills and pamphlets on BND. content was peeled off the Adbusters site, eduardo galeano's "upside down" book, and lots of sources for more info re. consumerism, racism, militarism, and poverty. and we did this outside the Eaton's Centre, -- self described as: "one of Canada's great public spaces and is a place like no other. Its spectacular glass galleria soars above a fascinating potpourri of over 285 shops, restaurants and services.

BND in Israel was wonderful Fun and organized in decentralized fashion. Groups operated in the streets of Eilat, Beer Shiva, Rechovot , Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Kfar-Saba and Haifa. Thousands of fliers were distributed; hundreds of posters were hang, some of us made costumes and street Theater. In Tel Aviv hundreds of people came to a convention on consumerism and others came to a street party. “don’t need- don’t buy ” Stickers were made. I myself had lots of fun dressing as the devil, buying souls and urging people do shop. Happy BND.

i watched the masses congregate in front of macy's department store on the day after thanksgiving, jockeying for position as they waited for the store to open and smiled.....it's a little easier to understand the obscenity and ridiculousness of it all when you take a step back an choose NOT to participate.

A group of us from the Neighborhood Unitarian Universalist Church in Pasadena, CA have now made a tradition of spending Buy Nothing Day hiking in our local mountains instead of hiking through the malls. For the last two years a diverse group of 30+ folks have spent this "holiday" trekking up Eaton Canyon, soaking up the warm early morning sun and rock hopping back-and-forth up the stream to make our way to the beautiful water fall at the head of the canyon. The time and energy we spent in nature and in community with friends, old and new, was worth far more than anything we could... [read more]

Sheep Herd Hits San Francisco Stores for Buy Everything Day --- On the busiest shopping day of the year a herd of consumer sheep crowded into the Union Square shopping district, bleating “baah...buuy moore stuuff” and “sweeeatshop”. Some of the sheep held signs stating: “America - Open For Mindless Consumption”. Lady Liberty shepherded and handed out Christmas Gift Exemption Vouchers. The herd was tailed by SFPD’s elite Shopping Enforcement Squad. As sheep meandered on crowded sidewalks SFPD officers preemptively blocked access to major retail establishments.
