Pest control

Yes.

And about cats. When the main task of cats was pest control, but neutering was not as common, the old bag with a stone in the ditch was a well known way of ensuring the cats wouldn't become the pest instead.
It doesn't mean they didn't love cats (some people nowadays don't love cats either) but you had to be practical. If the food for the humans was scarce, guess who got priority?

Yes, you see what I mean! smiley - ok

My grandparents were farmers. They did not normally make pets of chickens. But one of the grandchildren lived nearby, and when the toddler brought the newly-hatched chick into the house...they ended up with a 'pet chicken'. You know, like General Robert E Lee had...

They almost died of embarrassment in front of the neighbourhoods. They were apologetic. But they couldn't do anything about it. They loved their granddaughter. smiley - chick

To their relief, the chick turned out to be a hen. They feared a rooster that didn't know what species it was.

I can imagine you wouldn't want a crowing indoor rooster...
