Answer: You used a flip glass – well, two, really – to make flip, a drink containing a mixture of heated liquor or wine, sugar, egg, and nutmeg. You tossed the ingredients between the two glasses to mix them up, then heated everything by sticking a hot poker into the glass with the liquid. Bottoms up!
And no, we don't know how they managed to avoid salmonella back then, either.
