Where in the World Have We Been?

Willem and zebra friend. Not everybody knows someone who's been petting a zebra. Willem sent this photo to me labelled 'Kwagga en ek.' I told him, 'That's a beautiful quagga.' He replied, 'That's a zebra. Quaggas are extinct. But we call them kwaggas in Afrikaans.' So I learned something. That's what we're good for: showing and telling each other things we would never have known otherwise. That's why I love this site.

In this issue, you will learn many things you probably didn't know before. You will see things you wouldn't have seen if you hadn't take the time to read this. While everybody else is gossiping about the latest internet scandal and wondering how much money that blockbuster movie is going to make, we'll be noticing odd signs and being amazed at how much floral beauty you can get for cheap at the hardware store (thanks, Tav!)

We've even dug out some blasts from the past, our own and the Library of Congress's. So let's get started.

Here are some highlights from this week's menu:

  • Flowers, flowers everywhere: from a Pennsylvania farm to a French garden to an Austrian meadow to a mountain in South Africa.
  • Animals: Willem's crowned eagle will blow you away. I've dug up some zoo memories. Superfrenchie's spotted some sitting ducks. The Library of Congress reminds us that 'get a horse' was once a useful suggestion for motorists.
  • Cinema: Awix has done a deep dive into Citizen Kane. You'll appreciate. You'd better: this is what passes for intellectual activity around here. Not, obviously, my 'Deep Thought' columns, which continue to attract random graffiti. Don't worry: this is the last serious one for awhile.
  • A cool tale: FWR has one. It's 100% true. You'll be amazed. (Send us your Create stories: tell us about your places of wonder.)
  • Signs: History, bad spelling, and beer. That sounds about right.
  • A video: This one doesn't have any animals, plants, or moodily-lit clouds in. It's exciting racecourse action. We thank our Hoggett cinematographer.

We'll be back next week with more Stuff. (Send more Stuff!) Remember to get vaccinated when it's your turn. Dodge the raindrops or wear a hat (looking at you, Prof!). Eat your vegetables: that asparagus worked hard to get that tall.

Quote of the Week: Since their introduction in 1978, Lego's Minifigs have, um, reproduced at a rapid rate. In fact, the toymaker has been making the little fellas at such a pace that they outnumbered humans somewhere in 2019.

Hoggetts have a request. They'd like you to help identify this creature. No, not the one in the picture: we know what that is. It's a Wolpertinger, native to Bavaria. This is a nocturnal creature overheard in Florida. Can you identify its cry?
