Dawn

Coping with Grief
I held your hand, kissed your face.

More child than man, that dreadful dawn.

Guilt, relieved that you'd let go.

Fought selfish thoughts, to keep you here.

But glad the pain had ceased.

One more kiss, one more tear.

The flood held back. For now.

The dawn, that day, brought no relief.

A lifetime loomed, without your smiles.

The happy songs, the silly jokes,

The urge to go back inside, to be with you.

But, broken, lost, I walked away.

More child than man, that dreadful dawn.
