The Ghost of the Circle Line

0 Conversations

When commuters have travelled home
latecomers stand on empty platforms
watch for lights in sooty tunnels
clamber into lurching trains.

Sometimes they notice in a corner seat
the smoky shadow of a business man,
neatly dressed in pin-stripe suit
with bowler hat and rolled umbrella.

Always silent, he travels on, past
Sloane Square, South Kensington.
They say he lost his office job
left for home but never arrived.

He caught the Tube at Westminster
passed Bayswater and Edgware Road,
travelled round the loop for evermore
became the ghost of the Circle Line.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
