Oddity of the Week: Go to Church!
Created | Updated Feb 2, 2014
They really want you to go to church in Punxsutawney.
Roadside Appeal
This time of the year, weather-watchers turn their attention to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, home of the Grundsau, aka the whistle-pig or ground hog. Phil's the expert on when spring will come.
Unfortunately, we don't have a photo. He's sort of shy. But we found this gem of a roadside billboard from 1940. It was strategically placed to catch the (very) odd motorist's attention back then, between Sykesville and Punxsutawney.
We gather they wanted you to attend church on Sunday. But we have to ask: couldn't they have made it seem more inviting? A stained-glass window, perhaps? A friendly family? A pretty girl? Jesus and some kids?
The mind boggles at the state of advertising back then. They really needed Don Draper.
We hope you had a good Ground Hog Day. We also hope you don't get stuck in a temporal causality loop. If you do, we really hope it isn't in 1940. Posters like that are bad for one's mental balance.
