Weekends In the land of Oz

My current location of habitation is in sunny Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, Earth, Galactic Sector ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha.

The weather here is just perfect, with nice hot Summer days, and cool yet pleasant Winters. Summer averages somewhere in the region of 30 degrees C, and Winter daytimes temps average 24.  Summer nights (could be a good name for a song, but I digress) drop to maybe 23 on average, and in Winter we sometimes drop to single figures.  Our Winters tend to last only a few months, yet even with the colder days the outdoors is the place to be.

So what is a monkey man to do with all this outdoorsy time available? Why, go fishing & 4WDing of course!

My fave spot to fish is of course the beach, and what better beach to fish at than one where you HAVE to drive 10kms up the sand before the fishing spot is revealed? This way one gets the pleasure of driving off-road to go along nicely with my day of fishing.....

The best fishing beach close to Brisbane would have to be a little stretch on the surf side of Bribie Island. It is a mere 60Kms up the road from Bris Vegas, so less than an hours travel in a hydrocarbon powered movement device.  Oh the days spent whiling away time with a fishing rod with the waves lapping over my feet on the sand. Of course, fish being the finicky creatures that they are - not every trip is a dinner producer!  But I can truthfully state that we have never been fishing here without catching at the very least a few fish too small to be kept. Generally though, there is enough in the bag at the end of the day to feed me and mine.

If you have a 4WD, and live in SE Qld, you really need to spend a few Golgafrinchan leaves on (at the very least) a day pass to drive on the beach.  I myself go for the 12 month pass, that way there are no delays when we decide to go fishing at a moment's notice. If fishing is not your thing (what is wrong with you?) then there are also other beach options - why not explore the old WWII defensive fortifications dotted all along the beach. Or take a leisurely trip through the inland track (some fun 4wd action in places). Just being on the beach is as therapeutic as downing a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster with your pals, or deliberately asking your plastic pal who's fun to be with from the Sirius Cybernetics CorporationTM to do some really tedious job just to hear him complain.

There is only one thing wrong with spending many hours fishing at Bribie Island - there are never enough weekends each year to spend there!
