Not all historic photos are in black and white. And not all were taken on Earth.
Oddity of the Week: An Unusual View
As every photographer knows, the secret to getting a really good shot is finding a good place to stand. Right?
On 18 September, 1977, the Voyager 1 spacecraft was directly above Mt. Everest (on the night side of the planet at 25 degrees north latitude), 7.25 million miles from Earth. The moon was beyond the Earth as viewed by Voyager. Perfect.
Voyager had help, though. According to NASA:
' The photo was made from three images taken through color filters, then processed at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Because the Earth is many times brighter than the moon, the moon was artificially brightened so that both bodies would show clearly in the prints.'
Isn't that pretty? Thank you, Voyager. You can take our holiday snaps, anytime.
