Soul Searching....literaly!

I was just wondering if any scientists have tried to trace the human soul, or ghosts?
I doubt it's been done recently but I think it's quite likely that it has been attempted before at the turn of the 19th C if at all. Does anybody know?
The reason is that I, a 17 year old interested deeply in the occult, am applying to uni to do a physics degree. Of coarse I never thought for a minute that such a subject may lead me to the occult, however it would please me greatly to learn of past atempts, so that I may judge for myself whether it would be worth atempting or not.
