Nothing

This entry looks at Nothing. It tells you about Nothing. It tells you what Nothing is. It tells you where to find Nothing. It tells you what Nothing looks like. This entry, is literally, all about Nothing.

Which Nothing?

Of course, the word nothing, like a lot of words, has many meanings, and can be a number of things including a noun, pronoun, adjective and adverb.

This entry will be looking at the noun form of the word, looking at what Nothing really is. However, since the word nothing does have many meanings, the noun form of the word will always start with a capital N, to avoid confusion.

Dictionary Meaning

The Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary describes Nothing as 'something that does not exist'. Dictionary.com says that Nothing is 'something that has no existence'. Both of these meanings say that Nothing has no existence, therefore, how could there be a h2g2 entry on something that does not exist? Well, it is quite simple really. Although both entries say that Nothing simply does not exist, they both also say that Nothing is something. This is something important you should remember when looking at Nothing.

So, What IS Nothing?

This question has a very simple answer: Nothing is what fills the space in the absence of all that exists. Since Nothing does not exist, it cannot be where there is existence. It must therefore fill the space where there is no existence. In these places, Nothing can be found.

Where Can Nothing Be Found?

This question also has a very simple answer: Nothing can be found in a vacuum. According to the Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary, a vacuum is 'a space absolutely devoid of matter'. All matter contains particles, and it is these particles that carry existence. Where there is a place devoid of matter, it is devoid of existence, and therefore is full of nothing.

However, even in a vacuum, it is impossible to know where there is Nothing, as although there is an absence of matter, there are electromagnetic waves flying about, most of which we cannot see. It is impossible to know where there really is Nothing.

The largest known vacuum is in space. Although there is a large amount of existence in space, there is even more emptiness, filled with no matter. However, it is impossible to know if Nothing is actually in any of space - if there is a point in space where electromagnetic waves and matter do not reach. In fact, it is impossible to know if space in itself exists, leaving Nothing, nowhere to dwell.

What Does Nothing Look Like?

Looks are a feature of existence. Since Nothing does not exist, it has no looks. Space looks black as that is the absence of light, and where there is no light, there is only one visable colour - black. Nothing, in fact, has no colour, shape, or form. It is simply a thing, yet it is not.

Nothing is a very difficult concept to understand. To understand Nothing, you must understand that it is a thing with no existence, that is not affect by existence, and can only be where there is no existence. It is impossible to touch, see, hear, smell, or taste Nothing, as these are all characteristics associated with existence.

If you understand all of the above paragraph, then i'm sure you'll see - there's nothing to it really.
