Probe Records

1 Conversation

In 1971 a record shop was to open that was to influence the record buying public of Merseyside. Geoff Davies initially wanted to open up the wide range of music that was restricted to a few record stores with restricted catalogues, which was mainly chart and populist based.
Staff were individual and their own tastes immediately apparent with sneers and sarcastic comments. Some of the staff have gone into the music making business themselves these include Pete Burns(Dead Or Alive)and Pete Wylie(Wah Heat, The Mighty Wah). The original shop was in Button Street charcteristically just off the main thoroughfares of Liverpool(Church Street and Whitechapel)since those heady days the shop has moved to a different site entirely and under new management.
Alongside the shop was the label which supported the independent scene and consequently was under pressure to make itself viable, a plight suffered by the vast majority of independent labels. The major group on Probe over the years has been Half Man Half Biscuit who gained publicity by turning the chance of natiopnwide exposure on the Tube to watch thier belved Tranmere Rovers play. After splitting up Half Man Half Biscuit reformed and remain as the main reason that the Probe label is still going today
