Garius Lupus - When I can find http://www.asterlil.com roam around to find http://www.asterlil.com/h2g2/cafloat.html and download it to my computer. Don't you think it's time to disband ??
Try - http://www.bbc.co.uk/thenandnow/ - and enter Douglas Adams in the search box.

I was brought up with the BBC Radio (Childrens Hour and all that) the only commercial programme I was aware of was Radio Luxembourg.(Ovaltinies). When the BBC moved into TV they became a natural source of viewing for me. Today I much prefer to look and listen to the BBC than any other TV or radio stations. I do have the choice.
As with (what is to me a relatively new media) the WEB I can choose the surf the realm of the BBC or go World Wide.
What problem is there with making 'BBCi'( http://www.bbc.co.uk/ ) your home page and surfing the Web from there ??
Every organisation needs a sponsor - "He who pays the piper."
Could H2G2 survive without the BBC ??
Lets not forget that the BBC has been in the business of communication for a very long time. It has built up one hell of a reputation it has a world wide following because it is recognised as a reliable source of information and what is more it has survived. I suspect that http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/hub/ would have come about with or without h2g2. It would have been stupid to have reinvented the wheel, it would have been equally stupid to have put the wheels onto a tried and trusted machine if the wheels had been bent. <smiley>
In what way has the BBC affected h2g2 ?. As a Newbie I find myself looking at h2g2 itself and trying to understand who's really calling the tune and setting the standards, in much the same way that old h2g2ers are looking at the BBC.
Didn't the old original h2g2 have its origins in the BBC ? (DNA the man)
If you bother about h2g2 the revolution begins at home ?
and home is BBCi

Who really controls h2g2 ?? : http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/hub/

Who sets up and administers things like this ?

I registered with h2g2 and created my own space. This has automatically given me access to the DNA hub and associated sites for example :- F99998?thread=215068&post=2471037#p2471037 - Do I really want this ??

Does the answer in not wanting to link DNAhub to the BBCi lie in the BBC's policy with regard to advertising ?

Did the BBC ever push ' BBC Basic ' ? Even when it was running a TV series on computer literacy and at the same time working with Acorn to develop a computer that came alive in that language. Acorn's pathetic attempts to advertise and sell the computer were severely criticised at the time (Early 1980's). What part did the BBC play in Acorns failure to advertise and sell what was, at the time, an excellent machine bearing the BBC name?
BBC Basic is still a feature of Risc OS based computers but Acorn have gone.
Is history going to repeat itself in regard to:- <./>Powered by DNA, the BBC's community website engine</.>

Let's see what Moderation does with this next few lines. <smiley>
riscos can be found at - http://www.riscos.com/
MicroDigital and Castle are producing the latest of a long line of BBC Basic/RiscOS computers details can be found at :-http://www.microdigital.co.uk/omstd.htm and :- http://www.iyonix.com/Launch/winapc1.html
Anyone interested in Risc OS should enter (RISC OS) in the search box or go to A302004

Ancient Brit - Still using and enjoying BBC Basic. My Acorn badged Risc OS Computer and Keyboard still occupy pride of place in my office. I only use a Windows based machine for surfing the web and then only because MicroSoft are taking on the Web in the same way that they took on rival operating systems.

HAVE THE BBC GOT ANY FRIENDS ON H2G2 ?
For interest you could try another entrance to the world of h2g2:-
Try entering http://www.bbc.co.uk put "h2g2 " or any researchers name in the search box but better still try " Douglas Adams "(515,000 search results)
You need 'Real Player' for music/videos.

For the Record http://www.bbc.co.uk/thenandnow/ makes interesting reading. Entering " h2g2 " in this pages search box will reveal 101,00 results.

Tell my own Story ????
----------------------
The first three months in the life of a Newbie:

This is the story of an old man's fight for survival. It will tell of his first exploratory attempt at a conversion and put the entries/notes in sequential order as they happened. It will open up secret postings on his behaviour on a well known thread. It will reveal the thoughts that went through his mind as he struggled against all odds to defend his views and opinions.

It is a tale of coincidence, confliction and cussedness, coupled with sympathy and understanding.
Contacts will be revealed and names will be named. The story has to be told as a warning to all Newbies that there is more to h2g2 than a Welcome Message. I nearly lost both my Aces. Initiated a conversation where one of the researchers was moderated, but all will be revealed.

Progress will be at my speed and may take some time.
I am of course chasing my own 'tale'. When I catch it (which I hope I do before my time runs out <biggrin>)I shall retire and stay at home. A798104
