Cause and Effect

2 Conversations

Whenever we make a decision, even something so simple as pushing a button, our minds will instinctively analyze each and every possible outcome. This is inevitable. We don’t intend to do it, and may not even realize that it’s happening. Yet ultimately, it’s so mechanical we cannot not do it. For example, with something as simple as pushing a button you generally have two choices, do I push the button, or don’t I push the button. There are also various other questions you could ask in this situation. However those tend to further complications and generally shift off topic. Therefore we’ll stick to the subject.

When asking this question you must understand the topic of “the button”. For instance, you have to make assumptions as to what the button does. Is it something as important as starting a nuclear war, or will it cause a little sign (ie please don’t push that button again) to light up? You may never know this until you eventually give up, throw in the towel, and push it. This action is also, in itself, a cause. By choosing to push the button, you will eventually obtain an unknown final effect.

However, you also have the choice not to push the button. This can cause many additional effects. For instance, perhaps the button would have stopped a nuclear war, or started a human heart. Then there is always the probability that not pushing the button would cause you to give up, go to your car, go home, try to get some sleep, stay awake trying to think of the alternative, and die of exhaustion and extreme stress, because you couldn’t just push the button. Then again this could also happen to the former situation. Only, die from stress because you just had to push the button, didn’t you.

Then again just reading this entry could cause enough stress. When you stay up all night trying to think what you would do in this situation, because you just had to go and think about pushing the button. Anyway, these problems are a simple example of a cause and effect situation. Although the choice may be difficult, you must be prepared to face whatever the effect may be. So, go ahead, ask yourself. Would I push the button?
