I had a look at this today.
I don't know whether you want to mention Roman somewhere in the introduction (I was slightly confused about the definition of Legion at first, but it could just be me...). Apart from that I like the way you set the scene for the mystery...
In the paragraph about the structure of legions (beginning, "Most Roman legions had about 5,000 men", you mention 'The Vexillation Fortress'. Is there only one, or is it that each legion has one?
Footnote 3 should be after Uxelodunum rather than Staffordshire.
I notice the 14th legion was also sent to Britain but not involved in the construction of Hadrian's Wall. Just out of interest, is it known what happened to them?

A term applied to large Roman forts of between 6.4ha and 12.0ha which were occupied on a temporary basis by campaigning Legions.

Hello SashaQ 14th legion history
The 14th Legion (XIIII) Gemina Martia Victrix.
Aulus Plautius and Claudius in the Roman invasion of Britain in 43, and took part in the defeat of Boudicca in 60 or 61 they defeated Boudicca's force of 230,000, according to Tacitus and Dio, with their meager force of 11,000.
In 68 it was stationed in Gallia Narbonensis.
Rebellion on the Rhine In 89 the governor of Germania Superior, Lucius Antonius Saturninus, rebelled against Domitian, with the support of the XIIIIth and of the XXI Rapax, but the revolt was suppressed.
In 92, XIIII Gemina was sent in Pannonia to substitute the region, camping in Vindobona (Vienna). After a war with the Sarmatians and Trajan's Dacian Wars from 101 to 106, the legion was moved to Carnuntum, where it stayed for three centuries.
The XIIII Gemina fought for its emperor in his march to Rome to attack usurper Didius Julianus in 193, and contributed to the defeat of the usurper Pescennius Niger in 194, they probably fought in the Parthian campaign that ended with the sack of the capital of the empire, Ctesiphon in 198.
In support of imperial candidates in the turmoil following the defeat of Valerian, the XIIII Gemina supported usurper Regalianus against Emperor Gallienus in 260, then Gallienus against Postumus of the Gallic empire (earning the title VI Pia VI Fidelis—"six times faithful, six times loyal"), and, after Gallienus' death, Gallic Emperor Victorinus from 269 to 271.
In XIIII Gemina was still assigned at Carnuntum. It probably dissolved with the collapse of the Danube frontier in 430s. The Notitia Dignitatum lists a Quartodecimani comitatensis unit under the Magister Militum per Thracias; it is possible that this unit is XIIII Gemina.

I'm happy with the new title. It was a good point of Sasha's about Romans not being mentioned early enoufg. That hadn't occurred to me during my reading of it.

Bob, if you would like a photo of a Roman Eagle, I have one I can offer.
It's similar to this one, but more square on. Unfortunately my current computer's start-up drive has died and is awaiting repair.

Thanks Bob
I like the new title - sets the scene perfectly.
Thanks for the history of the 14th legion - quite a contrast with the 9th...

The new title is much better. It took me a few paragraphs to figure out what I was getting into before you changed it.
I had some trouble following some bits, of course I kept getting interrupted, but some of the language was irregular. Like you were typing as you were thinking and changed phrasing halfway through in a few places. If you haven't read throug it in awhile, maybe if you read through it all at one go you'll pick up some of the places I'm thinking of.
Overall, really pretty interesting.
I'll have to take another look when I can devote my full attention to it.
