The word Dragon come's from the Greek word Drakon meaning to see,to look at and more remotely to watch .
The idea of watching is retained in the story of the dragon called "Ladon" who assisted the three sister's who guarded the golden apples that were a marriage gift to Hera when she married Zeus. Also there is the age old addage of the captive princess guarded by a dragon.
A dragon has been identified as being similar in appearance to a crocodile, usually of a very large size with a serpents tail and wings with the ability to breathe fire.
In the middle ages it was used to symbolise sin and paganism. The metaphor being derived from The book of Revelations chapter xii,9, where Satan is termed "the great dragon" and psalms xci,13 where it is said the dragon shalt thou trample under feet"
Numerous saints have been portrayed as dragon slayers.
What follows is a list of some of those Saints.
St Romain of Rouen, slayed the huge dragon,La Gargouille, which ravaged the Seine.
St Martha, slayer of the terrible dragon Tarasque at Aix-la-Chapelle.
St Florent, who killed a dragon that haunted the Loire.
In The UK there is also a history of dragons,as in the Welsh dragon and they play a part in Arthurian legend. As when Merlin had listened to the story of his birth and challenged Vortigern's druids. If you are so wise, tell me what lies beneath these ill laid foundations. They couldn't tell him for they were ignorant of the tower's collapse.Merlin ordered a pit dug and said beneath this place you will find a pool that contains two hollow stones. There two dragons lie sleeping. Vortigern believed him.Once the pit had been dug and the pool drained he went down to see for himself and there as Merlin had said were the two dragons. One white and one red.Symbolising the fight between England and Wales that was happening at that point in history.
