We've created a Word document and an Excel Spreadsheet as the To-Be documentation about Permissions and User Roles. We've prepared them in MS Office because we may need to compile them into a larger document and share them with people outwith h2g2.

Scope
Permissions and User Roles fit into two other main topics: security (which is a pretty techie subject) and Roles and Responsibilites - ie who does what. We'll tie them altogether when we get to writing the documentation for those subjects
Where we are now
So far as I know, there aren't any existing help pages descibing Permissions and User Roles, but I'm happy to be told otherwise and add links as appropriate.
What's already been said on the subject
Let's face it, this is a pretty dry topic, but I did post about it in Milla's thread. The word document is an update of that post.
How do we describe this, then?
There's a table of user permissions for managing Entries, and that's about it, really. I'll add in permissions for conversations when we've had the conversation about moderation. We'll combine it with the documenttation for Roles and Responsibilities (ie the Volunteer Groups). It may seem a little incomplete, but I wanted to get it up here as soon as I could.
How to use Magrathea's workshop
We take as our starting point what has already been said and done on this topic, but there may still be differences of opinion, of course. We hope to reflect a consensus, but occasionally we'll have to go with the majority opinion.
The threads attached to this entry
All the pages in Magrathea's Workshop have the same basic structure and at least the same three threads:
- one about the status quo
- one where we discuss how we want the Roles and Permisions to be
- one where we discuss the document itself.
We are working to a time-table which will be dictated by the BBC's timetable for disposing of the site. We'll make an announcement on each page when we think the document is nearly done, and again when it's finished.
We've said it before, and we'll say it again - Don't Panic!
