Fate Amenable To Change

I thought I may as well post my post from the book nook over here as well. smiley - smiley

I can converse about religion till the cows come home so if you want to go to a more appropriate place then send me a link.
Point 1 - Do they teach / believe the same as Jews and Muslims then? That there is just God?
Point 2 - There are indeed many instances of alchohol being tolerated in the Bible, Fruit of the Vine could be translated as grape juice? Ie non alcoholic? I can find out what the exact wording in Hebrew is if you want?
Point 3 - The Bible is indeed littered with stuff about how men should do the religious thing not woman, whether Christians uphold 'old' values or choose to reinvent values and rules is contentious to say the least. Where do you stand on this? I for one am inclined to say that if you follow a religion you should do precisley what it tells you - Gods law is timeless and appropriate for ever surely? The minorites one is slightly differnt - Jesus was not a white american...
Point4 - Interesting, I had never heard of that. I can see the point of it. THose that had a bad time perhaps did not have the right support? I have a Christain mate who did Christian works in India and it sounded like she was supported by a bunch of like minded people not just left to fend for themselves which sounds like what happened to the people who have a bad time and come back intolerant. Kind of defeats the object of being charitable

Is Mormonism a real word?

the alchohol point - thinking about it, the Fruits of the Vine thing - is that what Jesus recommended for communion? Anyone got a precise Bible chapter and vs for this?

The thing with the Bible is that none of it's accurate: it's all loosely translated from ancient languages up to 100 years after it all occured.

Yes. But whatever the scientists say, the fact remains that religions on the whole take it as fact (ish, depending on the religion or denomination), not stories losely based on something that happened a few thousand years before it was written down (ie the background to the Walls of Jericho).
And texts do lose something in the translation so to get the best idea you need to know what the original (And I don't mean god) author meant and you can only do that by looking at the original language.
Tha Talmud and the Hadith for example (sp?) are commentaries but the actual Text bears significantly more weight surely? And are meant as the original touchstone.

I suppose you're right.

But one example. In all the gospels, Jesus said that divorce was wrong, because 'what God brought together no man can tear asunder' etc. Except in one [cant remember which] Jesus said that divorce was acceptable in the case of 'porneia'. We have no idea what the word porneia means, and has been interpreted in lots of different ways....

Existential Elevator

There are plenty of dodgy mis-translations in the Bible...

Apparently the translation of 'virgin' was from a hebrew word meaning 'young woman'. Don't tell any evangelical Christians I said that..
