Ok- 'Being John Malkovich' -great film right? Guess who directed it? Yes, well done, it was our man Spike. Sure, that's just one film, but he has only recently gone into feature film directing.
What are the best music videos you can think of? Beastie Boys- Sabotage, Fat Boy Slim- Weapon Of Choice, Bjork- It's Oh So Quiet, R.E.M- Crush With Eyeliner? These were all directed by Spike Jonze, and many more. He has also done many adverts for companies such as Levis, Coke, and Nintendo.
Spike started out doing photography at high school, but being a keen skateboarder and bmx rider he started shooting movies of these sports and has made some of the best skate movies ever, including 'Video Days'.
As well as photography and directing he also co founded Girl Skateboards and Dirt magazine and has had a large input in other companies and publications.
From his skateboarding vidoes (often acompanied by music) he moved into music videos, where he has had his most success and through which he won Billboard's 1994 Music Video Director of the Year award.
Spike has also done a spot of acting, of which he is very capable, most notably in Three Kings as Conrad "...I don't really have a day job..." (yes, that's him!).
His directorial debut 'Being John Malkovich' drew such comments as "Stupendous, fantastic- a work of insane genius"- The Sun, and his second film- Adaption, starring Nicholas Cage and Penelope Cruz, is due for release late 2002.
All things considered, Spike Jonze will undoubtedly move forward to be recognised as one of the greatest directers of all time!
