An article about walking south for a mile down the High Street in Southampton.

The walk should take at least 20 minutes.

Hi Bluebottle, this is a nice piece.
Would it be worth mentioning that the new, replacement QE Liner is to make Southampton its home port? Other than that, looks good. smiley - ok

Southampton is The Gate for England to the rest of The World --From there and to there come and go thousands of people who changed the World and History for good--In London this was improved when the railroads arrive from Southamton and Folkestone they were received by the first mile of Subways on the Southern Bank of The Thames--That line connects the railroad Stations coming from the south with the City under the London Bridge coming since The Romans---
On this article all the important things are recovered for enjoying the importance of History---smiley - ok

Seasons greetings <BB<

Well you wanted some ideas I hope you do not think them Nitpickey.

This is a Norman merchant's house built in the late 1100s, over a century (smiley - smiley over 1000 years would be better) after King Cnüt's death. The ground floor was a warehouse that originally was next to Southampton's South Quay's waterfront, yet after the town walls were built in the early 14th Century it was protected by the South walls. The first floor had a hall and two chambers, used as private rooms and bedrooms, as well as a counting-house.

King Cnüt>>>(Kund) 944 to 1035AD<smiley - smiley<< did, in fact, visit Southampton following the death of Æthelred II in 1015. It was in Southampton that he was declared King of all England, although he was later crowned in London, and it was in Southampton that he famously ordered the tide not to come in, proving a point to his sycophantic followers who claimed he could do anything.

---------

The merchants house had a period garden as well is it still there.
You could link the Spitfire or Mitchell to the Staffordshire entry. (see below)

Titanic Captain Brown also appears in the Staffordshire entry.

----------

The City had a New World connection, please look at this Wiki text and see what you think.

"Initially, the plan was for the voyage to be made in two vessels, the Mayflower and the smaller Speedwell, which had transported some of the Pilgrims embarking on the voyage.

The first voyage of the ships departed Southampton, on August, 1620, but the Speedwell developed a leak, and had to be refitted at Dartmouth on August.

On the second attempt, the ships reached the Atlantic Ocean but again were forced to return to Plymouth because of the Speedwell's leak. It would later be revealed that there was in fact nothing wrong with the Speedwell. The Pilgrims believed that the crew had, through aspects of refitting the ship, and their behaviour in operating it, sabotaged the voyage in order to escape the year-long commitment .

After reorganization, the final sixty-six day voyage was made by the Mayflower alone, leaving from a site near to the Mayflower Steps in Plymouth, England on September 6/16.[10] With 102 passengers plus crew, each family was allotted a very confined amount of space for personal belongings. The Mayflower stopped off at Newlyn in Cornwall to take on water." From Wikipedia. Not for cut and paste. Tradition has it the Pilgrims departed via the Watergate.

---------

And please explain "Lammas Lands" in the text, I know it is basically a commons (graze your live stock collect wood for your fire that sort of thing) but it needs some detail.

This is a nice entry <BB< well done by the way there is a good city panorama from John Lewis Coffee shop.

Look at A72319737 Dublin Statue Trail a photo combination like that would be excellent.

Me again <BB<
Originally the county name was SOUTHAMPTONSHIRE, over the years the county name was shortened to Hampshire, or Hants, (as in Northamptonshire which retained the old name), Southampton retained the old name and was possibly the county town at sometime in the past.

Please consider if worth including.

Good points made.

I've changed Cnüt to Cnut as the block preventing its use claiming it is obscene has been removed.

Although the merchant's house has had a period garden, current plans are to develop the garden and turn it into an outdoor cafe. Not the right decision in my mind, but there you go - so I've not mentioned it as it might not be there for much longer.

I've got a link to the Spitfire entry and have included a link to Staffordshire.

It's a really good suggestion about mentioning the Mayflower and Speedwell, but sadly I'm writing about the QE2 Mile, and limited to what is on that route or easily visible from it. The quay where those ships left from and the Mayflower monument are both, sadly, not on the QE2 Mile. Which is a pity.

I'd love it if I could include lots of photographs in the album of some of the route's highlights. I'm not sure what the policy is on having more than one photo, but I've got photographs of all the landmarks along the way.

West Quay

The West Quay is by far the largest shopping centre in Southampton. Opened in 2000 it contains approximately 100 shops and restaurants of various sizes on several floors, and the main entrance is in Above Bar Street. The name derives from the site in the mediæval period being near what was Southampton's western quayside before land reclamation.

It's a really good suggestion about mentioning the Mayflower and Speedwell, I might be wrong but I thought the ships left from the above mentioned gate.

By the way this is a excellent entry well done smiley - applause

The Dublin photo montage looks great - it would be of real benefit to the article if a montage is added to it.

Sadly, although the West Quay shopping centre is well and truly visible from the QE2 Mile, with one of its many entrances on Above Bar Street, the West Quay itself isn't. But I could always at a later date do a history of Southampton article which would well and truly mention the Mayflower and Speedwell.
