This weekend (1-4 November) was fairly active on the geological front : not just 1 massive earthquake, but two; and there was also a volcanic eruption in Equador, close to the capital Quito. This comes only a few days after the hugely tragic earthquake in Italy. Nebraska, US also experienced a significant tremor.
The earthquakes in Alaska and Sumatra both recorded magnitudes greater than 7 (Alaska was 7.9), making them some of the largest earthquakes so far in 2002. Thankfully casualties appear to be modest. If they had hit built up areas the devastation could have been enormous.
