Dear John

"Dear John." In my opinion one of the finest sitcoms that the BBC has ever aired. In John Sullivans comedy Ralph Bates was a recently divorced school teacher, forced to watch as his ex-wife and his ex-best friend take his house, car and main custody of his son after she decides to leave him. His attempt to rebuild his social life revolves around his joining of a singles group the "1-2-1 club" where he meets a range of misfits and to an extent freaks. These range from the ultimate geek Ralph to super cool Kirk St Moritz; who has a spectacularly funny double life. John meets a prospective comrade and partner (played by Belinda Lang) who although attractive is man shy and John never seems able to win up enough confidence to bite the bullet and ask her for a date.
This fabulous John Sullivan series (one of many from the writer of Only Fools & Horses and Heart Burn Hotel), ran for two series in the UK and span off an American copy starring Judd Hirsch which although mildly amusing never captured either the humour or the pathos off the original.
Why in recent years the BBC has failed to repeat the original British version is a mystery, but lets hope they do so soon.
If you have any comments or info on why it has not been repeated or released on video / DVD please let me know at [email protected]
